CAMPAIGN 2024: Meet Democratic Congressional Candidate Shomari Figures
CAMPAIGN 2024: Action 8 News is getting you ready for the April 16 runoffs in the District 2 Congressional race. Meet Democratic candidate Shomari Figures.
Figures is the son of Michael and Vivian Figures. Michael Figures was an Alabama state senator and his mother was on Mobile City Council. When his father passed away, his mother was elected to fill his seat in the Alabama Senate, where she serves today.
Shomari Figures graduated from LeFlore High School, followed by the University of Alabama and at the University of Alabama law school. After serving as a law clerk on the federal court, he worked in the White House with President Obama, serving as the Domestic Director of Presidential Personnel. Â Most recently, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Figures faces Democratic candidate Anthony Daniels in the Democratic runoff on April 16. There is also a runoff between Republican candidates Dick Brewbaker and Caroleene Dobson.
The winners of the runoffs will face each other in the general election on November 5.
District 2 was recently redrawn to give Black Alabamians a better chance at representation. As a result, the district, which has been a safe Republican district for decades, is now hotly contested between the Democratic and Republican candidates. It is being watched across the nation due to the near-even split in the U.S. House of Representatives.
