CAMPAIGN 2024: Shomari Figures has won the Democratic runoff for U.S. House District 2.

Figures, who is the son of the late State Sen. Michael Figures and current State Sen. Vivian Figures, served in the White House under President Obama and for current U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. He is from Mobile.

He defeated Anthony Daniels of Huntsville, who is the Alabama House Minority Leader.

With 99% of precincts reporting late Tuesday night, here are the results:

Shomari Figures: 21,926 votes – 61%
Anthony Daniels: 13,990 votes – 39%

Figures will face Republican attorney Caroleene Dobson of Montgomery, who beat Dick Brewbaker, a former state lawmaker and Montgomery car dealer, in the November 5 general election.

District 2 was redrawn last year under court order to give Black Alabamians a greater chance at representation. Alabama has seven seats in the U.S. House, but only one Black member of Congress.
