Strong To Severe Storms Likely Thursday Into Friday Morning
Our rather quiet weather pattern is about to come to an end. A strong cold front is heading towards the deep south and it’s going to bring rain and storms along with it. The weather behind the frontal boundary will be pleasant and that will set us up for a really nice weekend. We just have to get over this one big hurdle first. It’s been a while since we’ve had a real storm threat so we encourage you to stay weather aware during this event.
The strong to severe storm threat is likely Thursday through Friday morning. It will come in two rounds. The first will move through central and east Alabama Thursday morning and continue into the early afternoon hours. The main threats with this round will be damaging winds up to 60 mph, hail, and a tornado can’t be ruled out.
We expect a break in the storm activity during the late afternoon and into the early evening hours. The second round of storms will move into the area later Thursday evening and linger into early Friday morning. These storms will be capable of producing damaging winds up to 60-70 mph, large hail the size of golf balls, and possibly a few tornadoes.
The storms move out of the area and we begin to see improving weather conditions late Friday morning. We expect decreasing clouds along with dry/cooler air spilling into the region. High pressure returns and it’s setting up to be really nice weather conditions for Mother’s Day weekend. A mostly sunny sky will prevail along with milder temperatures. Daytime highs will only manage the upper 70s to lower 80s while overnight lows fall into the lower to mid 50s.
