The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of a plane crash that happened over the weekend in Selma.

Wal Planecrash0521 VoThe plane made an emergency landing Saturday night in a field just east of the Selma city limits.

The pilot was trying to make it to Craig Field Airport — after his plane started having engine trouble.

Airport officials were notified about the situation — and began making preparation for a crash landing.

“We were on site, on stand-by when he landed short about two miles north of the runway,” said Airport Deputy Director Dan Lane. “Wasn’t able to make it here and landed short on private land.”

Anytime you can walk away from a crash is a blessing. But this guy knocked the tops out of the trees 50 feet off the ground and I think he was very lucky.”

The pilot was taken to the hospital with minor injuries — where he was treated and released.
