Alabama Poppy Project in Prattville remembers Memorial Day in unique way
The annual Alabama Poppy Project commemorates Memorial Day in a unique way in Prattville.
The event is held Near Spillway Park and honors deceased members of the military with handmade ceramic poppy flowers.
The Alabama Poppy Project started five years ago. The poppy symbolizes the fallen through this art exhibit. Family members can purchase a poppy for $45 and a white ribbon will be placed on a poppy to represent their family member. At the end of the event, those family members will get the keep that Poppy or donate it back to the exhibit which is placed in the dedication field.
“We are teaching people what the history of the poppy is all about, and we are teaching people about how to maintain the memory and how to do family history, to be able to look into their own past and find those heroes. They are there, you just need to look for them, and once you find them let’s honor them and really keep their memory alive,” organizer Julianne Hansen told Action 8 News.
The exhibit will be on display until next Thursday, May 30.
