Behind the Biscuits: Ian Seymore

When Biscuits pitcher Ian Seymore first began playing tee-ball at a young age he says he didn’t even like it all that much. But that is a far cry from where he is now having played college baseball at Virginia Tech and now currently playing professional baseball.

Seymore first realized that playing professionally could be in his future while playing in the Cape Cod league the summer after his sophomore year of college.

“So the summer after my sophomore year of college, I had a really successful season in that summer year and I thought okay I might have a chance to get drafted here,” says Seymore.

Seymore was eventually drafted in the second round as the 57th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020. However, Seymore’s draft experience was anything but normal as it was right in the middle of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

“It was just kind of strange because there was nothing for me to do, so I got drafted and then was just kind of hanging out until something happened,” says Seymore. “It was sort of a unique experience where you just got to like take a step back and hang out with the people that you love.”

Baseball did eventually return, so Seymore got to work within the Rays Organization, but Seymore was met with more adversity in 2022 when he found out he would have to have Tommy John Surgery. And while it was a difficult time to navigate, Seymore feels that it has made him even more grateful now every time he gets to step out on the field.

“So I was in Montgomery to start that year and then ended up having to have Tommy John surgery, so this period for me now is just, it’s so much easier to be grateful to play when you aren’t able to play for so long,” says Seymore.
