Behind the Biscuits: Rick Hendrick
Biscuits Baseball
Since the Biscuits came to town 20 years ago Rick Hendrick has served as “The Voice of Riverwalk Stadium.” Hendrick who can also be heard on local radio throughout the river region on 95.1 The Fox, was inspired to pursue the role as “The Voice of Riverwalk Stadium” because of his love for sports.
“I remember when the team first came to town and they were holding a job fair. I remember thinking, okay one of two things is going to happen, and I told the owner at the time ‘I am either going to be hired by you to be your PA person, or I am going to buy season tickets.’ Either way I am going to be apart of this organization because I love baseball,”says Hendrick.
And as we know, Hendrick did go on to become the PA announcer for the Biscuits and has been there ever since.
“My favorite thing is, I love… I go back to my dad telling me before he passed away that God gave me a voice, use that voice however you can to help people, to help the community. I feel like when people come here that I am apart of their game day experience. So I want to make sure that whether announcing a batter up there or whatever it is that I’m doing that they get that memory from me being here in this stadium. So my favorite part of it is just being able to talk and let people hear my voice and being apart of their experience at Riverwalk Stadium,” says Hendrick.
Through the years Hendrick has gotten to witness so pretty incredible things at Riverwalk Stadium such as when Victor Mateo threw a no hitter, or announcing Jeff Francoeur as a Mississippi Brave on a Sunday and then watching him on Sports Center with the Atlanta Braves on the following Monday.
And as far as how long Hendrick see’s himself announcing for the Biscuits, he says he can’t see an end in sight.
“You know I think about eventually one day, you know I’ve got a long term plan of what I want to do. Me and my wife and my career as an announcer/ radio person, and it’s hard to see even that and not being apart of Riverwalk Stadium, it’s hard to imagine. People tell me every year when the winter is rolling around and we’re thinking about the following year, ‘are going going to be back with the Biscuits,’ and I will say the same thing, ‘well if they’ll have me.’ So as long as they’ll have me I’ll be here. And it’s really gotten hard to even see an end in sight,” says Hendrick.
