1 dead in officer-involved shooting in Opelika
Opelika police have released new details regarding an officer-involved shooting on I-85 Tuesday.
Officials say around 2:35 p.m., officers received a call regarding a vehicle crash on I-85 involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car.
Once officers arrived, they were confronted by a person armed with a knife. The incident ultimately led to an officer-involved shooting. The individual was pronounced dead on the scene.
ALEA has identified him as 33-year-old Damion Laddal Jones of Easley, South Carolina.
As standard protocol in cases like these, the State Bureau of Investigations is taking over the case.
Once they have completed the investigation, the results will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office who will present the findings to a Lee County Grand Jury.
