Cities of Auburn-Opelika and Tuscaloosa to no longer host Super 7 Championships
The cities of Auburn and Tuscaloosa will no longer host the AHSAA Super 7 football championships.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association tells Action 8 News that they, along with the cities, have agreed to remove Bryant-Denny Stadium and Jordan-Hare Stadium from the host site rotation.
The move comes after the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams and could require both schools to host playoff games in the future, which would conflict with the football championships.
Auburn Mayor Ron Anders, Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said their communities have enjoyed hosting the Super 7 Championships and understand the positive impact the games have had on their cities as well as the lasting experiences and memories that have been afforded the state’s high school student-athletes, their schools, and communities at the same time.
The city of Birmingham and Protective Stadium, which hosts the Super 7 Championships in December, will remain in the AHSAA Super 7 host rotation, and the AHSAA says it is continuing to study other rotation options as well.
