The Selma Police Department is in state of flux — amid a series of suspensions — and changes in leadership — at the top of the department.

Police Chief Kenta Fulford remains on paid leave. And the department is on its second interim chief — since his suspension.

Mayor James Perkins, Jr. named Dallas Co. Sheriff’s Office Assistant Chief Johnathan Cole interim chief late last week. Then put Assistant Chief Natasha Fowlkes on paid leave a few days later — pending an investigation.

“That’s an on-going investigation with the assistant chief,” said Perkins.

“You know as mayor you get, you get information that’s shared with you. Decisions need to be made. And we felt that it was in the best interest to do that at this time.”

Perkins says the investigation of the assistant chief is in its preliminary stages. He says an outside agency is leading that investigation.
