Behind the Biscuits: Nick Schnell

Montgomery Biscuits

Biscuit’s right fielder Nick Schnell went from playing high school baseball to being drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays overnight. Yes that’s right, overnight. Back in 2018 Schnell was drafted by the Rays in the first round as the 32nd overall pick.

“It was super exciting. I had everybody, all my teammates there, my family, there was about forty people at our house and we had a decent idea that I was going to get picked that night so there was a lot of excitement,” says Schnell.

During his time with the Rays Organization, Schnell has spent time with FCL-Rays, the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the Charleston RiverDogs, and the Biscuits.

As one can imagine, that big of a transition from high school ball to the professional ranks would be quite overwhelming and Schnell admits that it did take some getting used to.

“It was a big jump definitely. I went from having a lot of success on the field pretty much every time I stepped on it to a lot of failure. So, learning how to deal with that was definitely a big adjustment and just learning how to interact with grown men. Going from hanging out with a bunch of high school kids to a locker room full of grown men,” says Schnell.

And just like with any career, there are going to be highs and lows and the same goes for playing professional baseball. Schnell explains that even when things weren’t always going his way, he still had something that helped him keep things in perspective.

“When you’re not able to play and seeing guys move and play and go level to level while you’re not able to do that it can take a mental toll on you. But I think a big part of that for me has been leaning on my faith and trusting God that I have a plan and he has a plan for me and just trusting that his plan is better than anything I can imagine,” says Schnell.

When Schnell is not at the ballpark he spends a lot of time with his family. He and his wife have a two year old son named Beau.

“They are like my whole world. So I come to the baseball field, then I go home and I hangout with them. Beau is like a little baseball player, so I get to go home and just hang with him and play baseball around the living room. I took scotch tape and built a little infield in our living room, so we just go home and hit off the tee, and that’s basically my life outside of baseball just hanging out with him and my wife and it’s great,” says Schnell.

So far this season with the Biscuits Schnell has tallied 48 hits, 6 homeruns, and owns a .279 average.
