CBS News Poll: Growing number say Biden shouldn’t be running for re-election
A new CBS News/YouGov poll shows nearly three-quarters of those asked say President Biden shouldn’t be running for re-election, including nearly half of those in the Democratic Party.
The CBS News poll that was taken after Thursday’s presidential debate asked whether Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president. 27% of registered voters said that he did, compared to 72% who said that he did not.
When the same question was asked regarding former President Trump, the responses were split nearly evenly, with 50% saying he had those abilities, while 49% saying he did not.
When registered voters were asked whether Biden should be running for president, 28% said yes, compared to 72% who said no.
Among Democratic registered voters, 54% said yes, he should be running, with 46% saying no.
While some Democratic Party leaders and political observers say now is the time for Biden to end his re-election bid, voters aren’t so sure. When asked whether he should keep running, 55% of Democratic registered voters said he should, compared to 45% who said he should drop out of the race.
The CBS News/YouGov survey is based on a national sample of 1,130 registered voters who were contacted between June 28-29, 2024. All respondents participated in an earlier national survey of 1,881 registered voters fielded June 17-21, 2024. The sample was weighted by gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as past vote and partisan identification and weighted to account for differential response rates. The margin of error for the sample of registered voters is ±4.2 points.
