Fire destroys Butler County Health Department
Action 8 News was on the scene when a five-alarm fire destroyed the Butler County Health Department.
Authorities believed the fire may have started around midnight Sunday morning, but wasn’t reported until hours later.
Greenville Police Chief Justin Lovvorn said that traffic would have been light on Airport Road at that time on an early Sunday morning, which is why he believes the fire was burning so long before someone saw it.
Greenville Fire Chief Doug Belletete said the 911 call came in at 3:30AM and fire crews arrived at 3:36AM. By that time, he says two-thirds of the roof had already collapsed. No one was inside the building.
The Greenville Police Department and the state fire marshal will be investigating to determine what started the fire. Lovvorn said he sees no signs or arson or other foul play. He says he believes it was a problem within the building.
