Behind the Biscuits: Chandler Simpson

Behind the Biscuits

Biscuits Outfielder, Chandler Simpson, got started playing baseball at a young age when his father signed him up.

“Being around in the Black Community baseball was kind of growing, my dad put me in there, just threw me in there and just stuck with it so yeah that’s how I started,” says Simpson.

Simpson a native of Atlanta, Georgia didn’t go to far away to start his college career as he spent his first two seasons as a UAB Blazer.

“They blessed me with my first D1 offer. They allowed me to play D1 baseball. So I was there my first year with the Covid season, so didn’t really get to play my freshman season, came back from my would be redshirt freshman year sophomore year, played that season,” says Simpson.

However, after two seasons Simpson enter the transfer portal in search of his next opportunity. That next opportunity for Simpson just happened to be in the very place he grew up. Simpson spent the 2022 season suiting up for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

“A couple schools reached out, a couple big schools reached out and Tech came a calling. So made the move to Tech and was able to go back home and that was all a blessing and a great experience,” explains Simpson.

After the conclusion of the 2022 season at Georgia Tech, Simpson was drafted by the Rays Organization in round CB-B as the 70th overall pick. Since joining the Rays Organization in 2022 Simpson has spent time in the Rays Rookie Ball League and with the Charleston RiverDogs (Single-A), the Bowling Green Hot Rods (High-A) and most recently the Montgomery Biscuits. Simpson was called up to the Biscuits in May of the 2024 season and has already begun making a name for himself. Since his arrival Simpson has appeared in 33 games with the Butter and Blue. In those 33 games he has logged 50 hits over his 143 at bats and owns a .350 batting average.

Simpson’s favorite memory since being called up to the Biscuits is when he was able to hit an inside the park homerun at Riverwalk Stadium against Biloxi.

“When I hit the inside the park homerun, that was my first one in the minor league, so just to see the 1 under the homerun when I look at the stats up there is pretty cool,” says Simpson.

And while there’s many changes and adjustments players have to make when transitioning from the college ranks to the pro ranks, one thing has stayed the same for Chandler and that’s his walkup song.

“My walkup song is “Sum to prove,” by Lil Baby, just because I feel like I’ve always been underrated as a player in baseball my whole career so I feel like I have something to prove every time I come to the ball park and I’ve stuck with that since college,” says Simpson.
