Behind the Biscuits: Dru Baker
Behind the Biscuits
This week’s Behind the Biscuits feature takes a look at Biscuits outfielder Dru Baker who was drafted by the Rays back in 2021 in the 4th round as the 130th overall pick. Baker spent his college years playing baseball at Texas Tech University.
Throughout the years there were several things that helped shape Baker into the baseball player that he is, and one of the biggest ones of those thing was his father.
“You know he was hard on me growing up and I understood why and now he’s more of a life coach he’s a guy that I can sit there and talk to. He always keeps me humbled at times, but also even. He does his best to keep me even and I think that’s the biggest deal for me,” says Baker.
But of course, there were also other things that helped him grow as a player, like growing up in a state that is consistently known for producing great baseball talent, Texas.
“It’s a blessing and a curse right? So you go out every week expecting to play good teams and expecting to compete, and I think just having that around you and having so many good players around you pushes you a little more naturally you know to be better and to compete with those guys day in and day out. I think it just breeds competitiveness and ultimately brings out the best in you,” says Baker.
Baker also brought a piece of the Lonestar state with him to Alabama, just listen for his walkup song next time you visit Riverwalk Stadium.
“My walkup song is called Texas by Big X The Plug. You know I’m a Texas boy out here in Alabama so, I want them to know I’m from Texas as well,” says Baker.
And there is more to Baker than just playing baseball. Something that you might not know about him is that he likes to sing.
“I sing a lot. Mostly by myself, I tell ya that or around my girlfriend or around my family you know the people that I trust, but I love to sing when a song comes on and if you want to listen to it you’re gonna listen to me probably first,” says Baker.
And for all those out there that are chasing a “Big League” dream just like Baker, he has a helpful piece of advice.
“Keep going. And I think at the end of the day that’s all it is I think the people that become successful and do a really good job at the higher levels they never give up. Rosie our hitting coach always says the work will always show, so if you put in the work it’s gonna show,” says Baker.
