The Percy Julian Phoenix gear up for their first flag football season and Head Coach Nancy Boyd is hard at work getting her girls ready to compete.
“We have to start from basics, so I do a lot of classroom and being a teacher that helps. So we do a lot of board work, we do a lot of film review, like tests. Everything is just like a regular classroom to make sure that they learn it and then we go practice it,” says Boyd.
Boyd mentions that it has been fun getting to watch her team grow, develop, and learn something new.
“I actually have kids that don’t play anything else, and then I have kids that play other sports it just depends. But I have a lot of kids that haven’t done anything else they just want to come outside and try something new,” explains Boyd.
The Quarterback of the Phoenix is senior Zamaria Gantt who also plays softball. Boyd explains that Gantt brings lots of speed and the ability to throw with her to the flag football field from the softball field.
“She’s our quarterback because she plays softball, so she can throw but she’s also fast, so if she has to run she can do both of those. She’s really intelligent, so she picks up on things, she understands it, she’s a good leader, she’s an all-around good person so that works out for her to be our first quarterback ever,” says Boyd.
And while Gantt didn’t know much coming into the season, she explains she’s been able to learn a lot from Coach Boyd who played flag football in college.
“It’s been a long process because when I first came in I really didn’t know a lot, but it’s been easier with the coach that I have. She (Boyd) explains things so it helps,” says Gantt.
Boyd excited for her team to officially get the season underway.
“We’re going to be fun. It’ll be fun to watch, I just challenge people to come watch us play. We play our home games at Capital Heights on Wednesday’s and some of our other games are on Thursday’s so just come and have a good time and watch some good football, ” says Boyd.
