Campaign 2024: Delegates to the Democratic National Convention have begun to officially select their nominee for president through a virtual vote.
The process started this morning. Delegates are filling out electronic ballots at their homes, offices or vacation spots more than two weeks before the first delegate steps foot inside Chicago’s United Center for the Democratic National Convention.
The virtual roll call will allow Vice President Kamala Harris to claim the nomination by Monday evening.
The Democratic National Committee announced on Tuesday that Harris is the only person on the ballot because no one else submitted paperwork before the deadline. She has already received endorsements from enough delegates to clinch the nomination even before the ballots are counted.
A vice presidential candidate does not have to be named at this time. It is expected that Harris will name a VP running mate soon.
The reason that the vote is taking place virtually is because of Ohio. It has an August 7 deadline to get names for the state’s November ballot, but the Democratic National Convention doesn’t start until August 19.
Because of Ohio’s deadline, Harris will have to name a running mate by August 7.
