The Carver Wolverines welcome their new Head Coach Bobby Carr and they look to build off of their 7-4 season from a year ago. Carr is going into his 29th year of coaching this year and inherits a Carver roster that is loaded down with talent.

“I think we’ve got 17 players with Division I offers right now. But you know the thing I’ve been telling our guys is talent only takes you so far and I want our kids to learn to care about each other and learn to trust each other and learn to trust our coaching staff, so those are the things we’ve really been focusing on is unity and bringing our guys together,” says Carr.

Before coming to Carver, Carr had spent many years coaching in the Montgomery area, he’s also spent time in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and most recently at Elberta High School last year.

Senior Runningback and Wide Receiver Anthony Rogers is excited to have the leadership of Carr at Carver.

“He brought a lot of discipline to the program. I mean we’ve just been coming in and working hard and doing what he says and he’s just putting us on the right track to win games,” says Rogers.

Carver also going through another big change this year as they’ve now merged with Lanier High School. Both Carver and Lanier were previously big cross town rivals, so much so that the game was referred to as “The West Side Classic.” Since the two schools have merged Carr explains it has been a smooth transition.

“You know I think these kids have known each other, a lot of them played together in middle school or even little league. So, they are really excited for the opportunity to play together and we’ve got a chance to be really really great. There’s not been one issue and I think the adults in the area could probably learn a lot from the kids on this team. To see them put their differences aside, you know they come from different towns, different backgrounds, different races and so forth and to see them put all that aside and do what’s best for the group is something special right now, ” says Carr.

Players also in agreeance with Carr on the state of the team following the merger. Senior Wide Receiver Tristan Norman explains that he wants to make both communities proud and that he is excited to play with kids he grew up with.

“The merge is going good, we wont’ let them down and we’re going to make something out of it,” says Norman.

The Wolverines open up at home with Vestavia Hills on August 23rd.
