High School Football Previews
The Percy Julian Phoenix look to build off of their 5-5 season from a year ago and welcome their new head coach Kenneth White who is no stranger to the program at Percy Julian. White has been a part of the program for the past seven seasons where he began as a position coach and then worked his way up to then serving as the offensive coordinator for the past three season before being promoted to head coach. Before his time at Percy Julian, White coached middle school football at Capital Heights and Johnnie Carr.
White confident in his team this year and feels that what is going to set this group a part is the senior leadership.
“This particular team has a lot more seniors. We’ve got a lot more camaraderie amongst the guys, the chemistry is there and that’s kind of the thing we’re going to be leaning on throughout the season. I think that will be the difference in some of those close ball games that we have,” says White.
And while everyone’s goal at the start of the season is to win a state title Senior Quarterback Bryson McGrew and White both are just looking to improve each and everyday and they are confident that mindset will lead them to a deep playoff run.
“Number one, we tell the guys everyday just get better everyday. You want to be better today then you were yesterday and that’s kind of like our mantra, the thing that we push. So we don’t set specific individual goals, but it’s more team oriented, we want we guys not me guys, I tell them that all the time. Everything is just getting better as a team. We want more victories, we want to win, we want to make a deep playoff run,” says White.
“The goals I have for this year’s team is do better than last year, you know that was our motto the year before that and now it’s our motto again. Trying to build off of a 5-5 season, trying to get better and fix our mistakes from the previous year,” say McGrew.
The Phoenix open up the 2024 season on the road at Paul W. Bryant on August 23rd.
