Vehicles in McGehee Estates burglarized, one truck shot multiple times

Some homeowners in the McGehee Estates neighborhood awoke Monday morning to find their cars had been burglarized and one vehicle had been shot multiple times. A woman who heard the shooting at 2 a.m. and called 911 tells us police never showed up.

A young mother, who wishes to remain anonymous and lives in the McGhee Estates neighborhood, was rocking her baby at 2 a.m. on Monday morning when she heard an alarming sound.
“I heard two of the loudest gunshots I’ve ever heard and we hear gunshots every weekend. Nothing new but these were either in my front yard or across street. I ran in the hallway holding my baby and screamed my husband’s name and he heard them as well so he met me in the hallway and said y’all go hide. I’ll look outside,” said the homeowner.
The couple never saw the shooters but they called 911 to report the incident.
“I called 911 and they picked up, and I asked them to send someone and then waited up until 4 a.m. and never saw an officer,” said the homeowner.

When the sun came up, they saw that their neighbor’s truck across the street had bullet holes and shattered glass from gunshots. The truck had also been ransacked, and it wasn’t the only one. “14 homes were touched that night, only seven on my street,” said the homeowner. Bikes, money and weapons were stolen from cars and yards throughout the neighborhood.

“We knew that there were problems as far as lack of police officers, but it has substantially gotten worse in the past maybe six months. We hear gunshots every night and it is no big deal, and there have been multiple times when I have seen things happening while I’m driving and I think ‘do I need to shield my baby?’ And I have a little baby. And they’re thoughts I’ve never had until moving back to Montgomery. And I’m from here and I love Montgomery, but it is very frustrating to see very little progress being made gaining new officers, encouraging the officers, or acknowledging that there’s even a problem,” said the homeowner.

Several homeowners said they did not report that their cars were broken into to police because nothing of significant value was stolen. MPD tells us they have three reports of break-ins on Allendale Place. We will hear from more homeowners and have an update on this story later this week.
