High School Football Preview: Autauga Academy

The Autauga Academy football team went 8-4 last year. They made it to the AISA AAA semifinals. But a lot’s changing this season.

The Generals are moving up to the AHSAA. They’ll be playing in the 1A classification.

And they have a new head coach: Jeff Foshee. “I think our offseason program has been a lot better than what they’ve been doing in the past. (It’s) a lot more involved. (There’s) a lot more intensity, as far as in the weight room and stuff,” said Jeff Foshee.

Foshee served as an assistant at Autauga last season and, until spring 2016, he was the head coach at Stanhope Elmore for 16 years.

“Coach Foshee coming in here, he’s really changed things up. We got 100% trust in him, though, this year, and it’s gonna be a great year,” said Miles McGinnis, Autauga Academy senior offensive lineman. “He’s hard on us, but, I mean, he loves us. He gives us everything he’s got. We try to give him everything.”

Given that Autauga Academy is a smaller school, a lot of the guys play multiple sports together, so the players say they are close.

“As a team, we seem really together. We all get along well, because there’s not much of us. There’s only like 30 of us. So we all get together really well,” said Bryant Dupree, Autauga Academy senior tight end and defensive end. “Even though we’re new to the AHSAA, I think we’re going to be really good. I think we can compete with anyone.”
