High School Football Preview: Edgewood Academy

The Edgewood Academy football team went 4-7 last year but finished second in their region to qualify for the AISA AAA playoffs. Now the Wildcats enter their fifth year under head coach Chad Michael.

Last season, Michael made the decision to move then-sophomore Brock Whitt to the quarterback position.

“He made a big jump for us last year with his athletic ability,” said Chad Michael, Edgewood Academy football head coach. “Having a half a season under his belt. Maturing, growing. I think having a chance to see him, he’s gonna be a good bet to make some real big plays for us back there.”

Whitt said he learned last year that as a quarterback, everyone is looking up to you. He’s worked on staying up for his teammates.

“For me, it was more working on myself off the field than it is on the field,” said Brock Whitt, Edgewood Academy junior quarterback and linebacker. “So just treating people with respect, getting them right. Be funny, be an accepting guy. So if someone’s having a bad day, you have to have a good day.”

As the Wildcats get ready for kickoff later this August, they’re looking to do even better than last year.

“We’ve made playoffs every year for the past four years,” said Parker Shaw, Edgewood Academy senior linebacker and running back. “It’d be nice to take that next step and get to that state.”
