High School Football Preview: Autaugaville

Autaugaville football comes off a 3-7 season. Now the Eagles are looking to turn that around so they can make the playoffs. Several big keys include developing their freshman quarterback and using the playmaking abilities of 8th grader Jason Brown.

“We have a young eighth grader who’s going to be electrifying,” Autaugaville football assistant coach Marcus Burrell said. “Last year, he had a couple of kick returns for touchdowns. He caught a couple passes. So this year, we’re gonna definitely rely on his speed, and we’re just making sure he’s in the right position at all times.”

Even though Brown is an 8th grader, he said he’s embracing a leadership role.

“Last season, we wasn’t really big on teamwork,” Brown, a wide receiver and defensive back said. “That’s why we had a bunch of mistakes, but we fixed that, and that’s why I believe we’re gonna have a good season.”

For Autaugaville junior offensive lineman Dekeidrich Pettiway, that good season includes making it to the postseason.

“Let’s make it to the playoffs,” Pettiway said. “Beat Autauga Academy, cause they’re one of our rivals this year: Autauga Academy. Get our Golden cleats back from the (Billingsley) Bears.”
