Troy QB Goose Crowder, OC Sean Reagan’s long connection

With a few weeks left in fall camp, Troy football named Goose Crowder its starting quarterback. But his history with first-year offensive coordinator Sean Reagan goes way further back.

Reagan served as Goose’s quarterback coach at West Virginia for two years before Goose transferred to Troy ahead of the 20-23 season. Then in a crazy twist of events, in January, Reagan accepted the offensive coordinator role at Troy. This kicked off a whole new chapter in the coach-quarterback relationship. Julianna Reichenbach asked Reagan if he thought the two would ever reunite.

“It never crossed my mind,” Reagan said. “Great guy, we recruited him to West Virginia. And he was a good fit up there, and he just wanted to play early. With the situation up there, it didn’t allow him to be in the competition for one or two at that time. And Coach Sumerall, when he was here, Troy, called and asked about Goose, and I’m like, he’d be a great fit. And, lucky for us now that he chose to go to Troy.”

Reagan says it’s been a seamless transition with him and Goose.

“I knew he was a smart player,” Reagan said. “He was an accurate passer, and he’s a football junkie. All he wanted to do was learn. So knowing that, that I had when I took the job back here at Troy is, is I knew what I was walking into, and was really excited about that. And the big thing is, Goose changed his body. Like he was probably in the 220s at West Virginia, and I think he’s 212 now – he’s faster.”

On August 14, Trojans named Goose their starter.

“I think it’s just the execution of the offense,” Reagan said. “His decision making is in the 90 percentile, which is really, really good. And his leadership ability, how he controls the locker room. Not just on the offensive side of the ball, but he’s a leader of the whole team. And I think when you have that at the quarterback position, as well as he executed the offense, he kind of really just won the job. And it was his to lose, but he took the reins of it.”

We’ll get to see Goose suiting up as QB1 when the Trojans kickoff their season on Saturday versus Nevada.
