A strong storm Thursday evening has led to power outages in Alexander City and forced some schools to close.

Both the Alexander City school system and Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City have announced that classes are canceled on Friday.

Alexander City Schools Supt. Jose Reyes, Jr., said that athletic events Friday afternoon and evening will go on as scheduled.

Thursday night, city officials said 911 calls were being routed to Tallapoosa County. They asked residents not to call 911 to report power outages. They said the city is aware of major power outage locations and crews are working to restore service.

Many traffic lights were reported out. There is some scattered damage.

The National Weather Service reports a thunderstorm-generated wind gust of 50mph was reported at Alexander City’s airport.
