Eastdale Mall has set new policies that the new general manager hopes will curb shoplifting and guns inside the mall.

General Manager Brian Smith released a statement saying that effective September 2, the mall has banned backpacks, messenger bags, large purses, suitcases, duffel bags and any other bags that are larger than 14″ x 14″ x 6″.

Smith said baby bags are an exception to the new policy.

He said store employees are allowed to bring in large bags, but only if they are scheduled to work that day.

“The retail theft we’re experiencing across this mall is a problem that affects everyone,” Smith said in a statement. “It limits product availability, creates a less convenient shopping experience and most importantly, puts our associates and customers in harm’s way.”
