Construction underway on community center in Montgomery

Construction is underway on a new community center in Montgomery.

The Calmar Community Center will be on Calmar Drive, just off Eastern Boulevard.

The 5,000 square foot facility will include meeting rooms and classrooms for Pre-K programs, workforce development and continuing education.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed says the center is being paid for through American Rescue Plan Act funds and a community block grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“We expect Calamar Community Center to open the doors in spring of 2025,” Reed said. “The center will cost about $2.5 million. Over the next eight to nine months, we expect to see the completion of five additional community centers — each designed to serve as a vibrant hub for its respective district and this is just phase one of this project.”

Reed said the other centers are also expected to be finished by the spring.
