Operation We Remember started for Veterans Suicide Prevention Awareness campaign

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs kicked off National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month by announcing their 2024 Campaign for Operation We Remember.

Operation We Remember is a Veterans suicide prevention awareness visual campaign that partners with universities, community colleges, high schools, and government agencies across the state to honor and remember the Alabama Veterans who have lost their lives to suicide. The campaign includes a display of 147 American flags to honor and remember the 147 Veterans in Alabama who died by suicide in 2022.

According to national data, the state of Alabama has the second highest number of Veteran suicides per capita.

“Alabama prides itself on valuing life, this is one of those examples,” stated W. Kent Davis who is the Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veteran Affairs. “What better way to take care of life, then those who have dedicated their lives to service to this country. We cannot forget about them. Wars do not end when the shooting stops. Sometimes those wars linger in the minds of Veterans for years afterwards. It’s important we remember that. It’s important we take care of those lives after the shooting stops, because those invisible wounds of war sometimes linger for a long time and we hope through an awareness campaign like this that everyone in Alabama comes together to realize we have an issue and we all need to collectively work on this issue together.”
