Montgomery Public Schools superintendent resigns
Action 8 News has confirmed that Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Melvin Brown has resigned.
The resignation came in a letter to the Montgomery County school board.
“It is with mixed emotions that the Montgomery County Board of Educations has received notice that Dr. Melvin J. Brown will resign as Superintendent effective November 1, 2024,” school board President Dr. Brenda Coleman said in a statement provided to Action 8 News.
“As much as I personally regret Dr. Brown’s decision, I am supportive of him and the decision that he feels he must make on behalf of himself and his family,” she said.
Here are the contents of the letter Dr. Brown wrote to the school board:
“It is with a mix of gratitude and anticipation that I have submitted my resignation as Superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools, effective November 1, 2024. Serving this community over the past two plus years has been an honor, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together. I would like to express my utmost thanks for the opportunity to work with the professionals of the Montgomery Public Schools over the past two years. I am infinitely grateful for the time that I have spent here and for the many accomplishments and innovations that we, as a staff, have achieved.
“As I have weighted the gravity of this decision, I have been completely committed to working for the students of Montgomery. I did not intend for this decision to be communicated in this way and would have preferred to do so in a more professional and structured manner. Unfortunately, what should have been confidential communication, followed by a plan, was shared publicly without my consent. This is yet another example of what has made this work that much more difficult. We will have more details in the coming days and look forward to providing additional context.
“I am confident that the district will continue to build on its achievements under new leadership. The dedicated educators, staff, and administrators of Montgomery Public Schools are more than capable of sustaining and advancing the progress we have made. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as your Superintendent. I am grateful for the support and collaboration of the Board, the staff, the students, and the community. As I move on to new challenges, I carry with me the lessons and experiences gained here, and I look forward to seeing the continued success of Montgomery Public Schools. I will work as closely as the district wishes to forge a seamless transition enabling the district to maintain the momentum that has been established.
“I appreciate your patience and understanding.”
Brown was named superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools in April 2022. He came to Montgomery after serving as superintendent for Reynoldsburg City Schools in Ohio, replacing Dr. Ann Roy Moore.
“Dr. Brown has done an outstanding job for the Montgomery Public School system. He is one of the best superintendents that I have ever had the opportunity to work with and he has moved this district forward in a swift and positive manner. It is imperative that my fellow board members and I come together to put forth a strategy that will continue the work Dr. Brown has started. We have an obligation to our students, families, and community to do such,” Dr. Coleman said.
