RB Hudson students reenact historic student-led march
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
Students at R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy in Selma — literally walked in the footsteps of some of the unsung heroes of the modern civil rights movement.
Students reenacted a march led by students in 1963 — held in response to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham.
Four young girls were killed in that blast. Students skipped school — and held a demonstration in protest.
Civil Rights Attorney — and Hudson alumnus Charles Bonner lead the reenactment. He was also one of the students who lead the march 61 years ago.
“Clovis and I organized all the school ourselves. Stood in the front of the school house and said don’t go to school today because they just killed 4 girls in Birmingham in the 16th Street Baptist Church and we’re going to march to protest that,” said Bonner.
The event also recognized Bernard and Colia Lafayette — for their work in the 60s — training Hudson students how to fight for change — using the principals of non-violence.
