Montgomery man seriously injured in hit and run while walking home from work
A grandmother is searching for answers after her grandson was hit while walking home from his job Tuesday night at the intersection of Norman Bridge Road and East South Boulevard. “It just hurts so bad it really does,” says Gloria Thompson with tears in her eyes as she holds tightly to a picture of her grandson Quanterious.
“It’s just hard knowing my baby is laying up in the hospital fighting for his life, and I mean nobody, the police department nobody, was there to try to help him. It was just the fire department and some of the witnesses they were helping out too as much as they could, and I appreciate them very much,” says Gloria.
It is the same route that Quanterious Thompson has walked twice a day for two years from his job at Krystal to his home off of Norman Bridge Road. But Tuesday night while he was walking home after working his shift around 6:30pm, his family says eyewitnesses told them two vehicles – a burgundy car and a gray car – hit him and drove off, leaving the 24 year old lying on the ground alone. His grandmother Gloria says someone called 911 and firefighters from Fire Station 12 responded to the scene, but MPD never did. “They called 911 and the police never showed up and he was still laying out there in the street and they never showed up at the hospital, so MPD they didn’t do anything. One of the witnesses told me there was a police officer at the light and he told the police officer ‘Hey a guy just got hit in a hit and run’ and the car was gone and the police officer told him I’ve got another call and he just sped off so my baby was left out there in the street,” says Gloria.
A spokesperson for MPD tells us their Accident Division was notified about a vehicle versus pedestrian accident Wednesday, and while our crew was filming the intersection Wednesday evening, officers from MPD were there for the first time investigating the scene.
“He’s a loving, kind person. He doesn’t mind helping people out. He keeps to himself and has never ever been in trouble in his life. Always keeps a smile on his face,” says Gloria. Quanterious is still in the Surgical ICU at Baptist South fighting for his life, and his grandmother Gloria told us she was so touched that a man who knew Quanterious from his walks to Krystal walked 1.3 miles to the hospital to pray by his hospital bed. The man did not want to be identified, but he wiped away tears as he told us what a great young man Quanterious is and what he prayed for by his bedside. “For him to be strong and come on back. He has his whole life ahead of him. This is a terrible thing that’s happened. God’s going to give him another chance. God’s gonna fix it.”
“He’s coming home to me. He’s gonna come home. A lot of people are praying for him and everything, so he’s coming home to me,” says Gloria. The Thompson family tells us Quanterious is in critical but stable condition. We will update you as we know more in the coming days.
