Auburn man charged with reckless murder in Interstate 85 crash

An Auburn man has been charged with reckless murder following a fatal crash on Interstate 85.

Opelika police say 41-year-old Armin Rubido Gomez Lopez was arrested today after he was released from a hospital in Columbus, Georgia.

He is charged in connect to a fatal crash on Interstate 85 crash that happened at the Exit 62 northbound exit ramp on September 7.

Opelika police say Lopez was driving an SUV southbound on the northbound exit ramp when he hit a car head-on.

The driver of the car, 50-year-old Dr. Malcom Goodchild of Fortson, Georgia, died at a hospital. A passenger in the car was treated and released.

Lopez is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Center awaiting an Aniah’s Law hearing.
