Man dead in Elmore County shooting

The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office is trying to determine what led to a fatal shooting Friday night.

Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin tells Action 8 News that deputies were dispatched at 8:39 p.m. to an accident just north of the Kowaliga Bridge.

Sheriff Franklin says the driver of the vehicle was traveling southbound when they veered into the other lane causing a head-on collision with another vehicle going northbound.

Deputies had determined that the driver of the vehicle had at least one gunshot wound.

The victim, 31-year-old Shukory Whetstone, of Alexander City, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators believe the shooting happened just north of where the accident occurred. Sheriff Franklin said the victim’s body was taken to the Department of Forensic Science to determine the official cause of death.

The driver of the second vehicle did not sustain any serious injuries in the crash.

No suspects are in custody at this time.
