Testimony continues in William Chase Johnson trial

Testimony continued Wednesday in the trial of William Chase Johnson.

Johnson is accused of killing Lowndes County Sheriff “Big John” Williams in 2019.

Several witnesses, law enforcement officers and experts took the stand inside the Macon County Courthouse this morning.

One eyewitness said he heard Johnson call Sheriff Williams the N-word during their exchange that night at the gas station in Hayneville. The witness said he jumped in his truck and left the scene after he heard gunshots, then minutes later, he was flagged down by a man that he said was Johnson.

The eyewitness said Johnson admitted to him that he “shot him.” After hearing that, the witness said he stopped his truck, grabbed his keys and jumped out of the truck and ran.

An SBI agent testified about securing the scene and gathering the evidence after the shooting.

There was also testimony from a forensic firearm expert and a forensic pathology expert, who testified that Williams was less than two feet away from Johnson when he was shot.

Johnson didn’t look up at graphic photos of Sheriff Williams injuries as a doctor described them to jurors.

Prosecutors have called about a dozen witnesses to the stand so far.

The trial resumes Thursday at 9 a.m.
