Reeltown football wins 2A State Championship

The Reeltown Rebels win their first AHSAA football title since 2009 behind Ja'Markius Smith's MVP performance

The Reeltown Rebels stormed to an AHSAA 2A state championship, ending a 14-year title drought. The Rebels defeated Tuscaloosa Academy 49-13 on Friday.

Quarterback Ja’Markius Smith was named Most Valuable Player, just one year after Reeltown fell short in the previous championship game.

“Remarkable group, they set a standard so high,” Reeltown football head coach Matt Johnson said. “We got so close last year and to be able to feed off of that. It’s extremely difficult to get here. And then to get here two years in a row and to be able to finish. I’m just tickled with these guys.”

The Rebels were hungry to win their first title since 2009.

“We’ve been working for so long to finally get over the hump and win a state championship,” senior wide receiver Finley Henderson said. “Coming up short last year made this moment even more emotional.”
