A Much Colder Weather Pattern Ahead

A colder weather pattern has established itself over the deep south and it looks like it will be hanging around for a while.  We will experience several cold nights with lows in the 20s to lower 30s and daytime high temps only managing the 40s to lower 50s.  It’s going to require keeping the warm gear handy until further notice. In the mean time, a frontal system will move into the state over the upcoming weekend.  We expect a round of rain and possibly t-storms  to work through the area Sunday into Monday. Right now, the strong to severe storm threat is low but this is being watched closely and an upgrade to the threat could be ahead.  Once the front moves south, a surge of much colder air will move in behind the frontal passage.  A mainly sunny and cold weather pattern will settle in through Wednesday.  It gets more interesting as we head into the latter half of next week.  Much colder air and moisture may be in the cards for us.  The question is will they team up and produce a wintry precipitation event for us.  There’s no doubt Arctic air will be over the region most of the week.  Model data wants to develop an area of low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico.  The GFS American model buys into the idea of a deep south snow event but the European model has the low weaker and less of an impact on our weather.  It’s still too early to discount either model, so we look at future model runs and update as the picture becomes clearer for area.
