Cloudy Sunday, rain/storms Sunday night, very cold next week

Saturday was another day with abundant sunshine across central and south Alabama. However, morning lows were in the mid to upper 20s, so daytime highs only rebounded into the mid and upper 50s. Clouds increase Saturday night, which keeps Sunday morning low temperatures milder. Sunday looks mainly cloudy, but warmer as strong south winds boost afternoon temperatures.

A strong cold front sends a line of rain and storms into west Alabama Sunday evening. A few storms may become strong to severe, capable of damaging wind gusts and perhaps a brief tornado. The storm prediction center places a marginal (level 1/5) severe risk across west Alabama. Storms likely trend weaker and sub-severe as they move into west Alabama after midnight Sunday night.

Rain and storms depart Alabama prior to sunrise Monday. Temperatures turn sharply colder behind the cold front. Morning lows range from the upper 30s to low 40s. Temperatures remain shy of 50° Monday afternoon. Brisk northwest winds behind the front result in lower wind chill values. Monday night lows fall into the 20s. Tuesday looks mostly sunny, but high temperatures remain shy of 50°.

High temperatures range from the upper 40s to low 50s Wednesday and Thursday with a mostly sunny sky. Clouds increase with rain late Friday. This weather system has shown potential for frozen precipitation across part of the south, but Saturday’s model runs showed cold rain for the southern half of Alabama. Stay tuned for updates, as our late-next-week weather outcome remains unclear.
