Jim Graboys named permanent Montgomery police chief
James “Jim” Graboys has been named Montgomery’s permanent police chief.
Mayor Steven Reed made the announcement at a news conference this morning at city hall. The announcement came after a national search and months of evaluation, consultation with community leaders and help from a public safety executive recruitment firm.
Chief Graboys, who was appointed Interim Police Chief on July 15, 2024, bringing more than 20 years of experience with MPD, as well as leadership roles at the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and as Chief of Police at Alabama State University (2012-2019).
“Chief Graboys has shown outstanding leadership during his tenure,” Reed said. “I’m confident he will continue to lead the Montgomery Police Department with integrity, vision, and a steadfast commitment to our community’s safety.”
Graboys replaces former chief Darryl Albert. Mayor Reed put Albert on administrative leave last April. A reason was never publicly stated. Albert resigned later that month.
Deputy Chief John Hall, who is Chief of Investigations, was named acting chief until Graboys was named interim chief.
