Troy’s Tayton Conerway named Sun Belt Player of the Week
After recording a number of career-highs in Troy’s two wins last week, Tayton Conerway was named the Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Conerway, a senior guard from Burleson, Texas, is the second Trojan to earn the honor this season after Jackson Fields won it on Nov. 12 following the first week of play. Conerway helped lead Troy to a pair of crucial road wins at App State and Marshall. He averaged 18.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals on an impressive shooting clip of 63.2 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from distance.
“Tayton is very deserving of this honor after such impressive and gritty performances on both sides of the ball last week,” head coach Scott Cross said. “We all see the amount of work he puts in every single day to play at such a high level, and seeing it come to fruition is very cool. He is just scratching the surface of what he can do this year, and I can’t wait to see what else he has in store.”
Conerway scored a career-high 20 points on 8-15 shooting in Saturday’s 14-point comeback victory against Marshall. With the Trojans trailing by two late in the second half, Conerway leveled things up at 57 with an impressive layup with 1:33 left on the clock.
He finished the night with five steals, four rebounds and three assists.
In Thursday’s eight-point win over App State, Conerway had 16 points on 4-4 shooting – all 3-pointers – while recording a career-high eight assists. It’s the most assists in a game by a Trojan this season. Conerway also had four rebounds and two steals.
This season, Conerway is second on the team with 10.6 points, while leading in assists (4.3) and steals (2.9). He leads the Sun Belt in total steals and steals per game, while ranking fifth nationally in both categories.
Conerway has eight games with double-digit points, 12 games with three-plus assists and 12 games with two-plus steals this year.
Troy is back in action this week for a pair of home games. Troy hosts Texas State on Thursday at 6 p.m., and Arkansas State on Saturday at 3:33 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Troy Sports Media Network.
