Troy men’s basketball takes first Sun Belt loss against Texas State

Texas State outrebounded Troy 20-11 in the second half as the Trojans fell 74-73. Head coach Scott Cross says the Trojans need to be tougher.

Troy men’s basketball led Texas State at nine at halftime. But Texas State outscored the Trojans by ten in the first half to walk away from Trojan Arena with a 74-73 win.

“We self-destructed,” Troy head coach Scott Cross said. “They were tougher than us, they had more will and more grit to them and for one reason or another our guys just didn’t sit down and defend. And it looked like a very middle of the pack mediocre basketball team that last 30 minutes and it’s not good enough to win a championship.”

Texas State (9-7, 2-2 Sun Belt) outrebounded Troy 20-11 in the second half as it handed the Trojans their first Sun Belt loss.

“We’re going to have to figure it out,” Cross said. “Guys are worried about things they can’t control and they just need to focus on things that they can control. When we do that, we’re really really good. When we don’t do that, like I said, we’re very, very average.”

Reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Tayton Conerway led the Trojans with 15 points.
