8 ON YOUR SIDE: Bird flu blamed for low egg supply, higher prices
You may be noticing fewer eggs at the grocery store and higher prices.
Experts say that’s because the U.S. is experiencing an egg shortage due to bird flu. They say the situation may not improve anytime soon.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says more than 17 million egg-laying hens died of bird flu in November and December alone. The USDA says it will take months to replace those flocks.
That has caused prices to spike.
According to Nielsen IQ Data provided by the American Egg Board, the average price of a dozen eggs of any kind at the end of December was $4.33.
That’s up nearly 25% from the beginning of November.
