Be ready for dangerously cold temperatures, snow, “black ice” on the roads
Even with the snow ending, there are still winter weather concerns to prepare for in Alabama.
Temperatures will be dangerously cold overnight and into Wednesday morning. The expected low in Montgomery is in the mid-teens, with other places falling below that.
You will want to stay indoors or at least limit your time outside. Keep skin covered at all times.
Know the danger signs of hypothermia. It’s a good idea to have a blanket in your car in case you break down.
In many places, roads are impassable due to snow and ice. That includes county roads throughout the area.
Remember, this was an unusual storm. Heavier snow fell to the south, making road conditions worse the farter south you go. Travel is bad in Butler, Pike and Covington counties and the worst near the Alabama coast.
Beware of “black ice” which you can’t see. The Alabama Department of Transportation says this may be especially bad on bridges until temperatures rise to above freezing.
If you must be out driving, go slow and don’t slam on your brakes if you feel yourself sliding. If you skid, turn in the direction of the skid to regain control.
Overall, you need to still follow general winter safety tips. Don’t leave your pets outside and make sure to leave a faucet dripping to avoid frozen pipes.
Temperatures will climb to above freezing on Wednesday in most places. That should allow for melting during the day.
