Clearing And Bitter Cold Overnight

We’re in the midst of a winter storm and the impacts are significant across our central and southern counties.  Snowfall has already reached 3 to 7 inches around Covington County. Areas along and just north of the 80/85 corridor have seen around an inch.   The snowfall will taper off and end during the late evening but what has fallen isn’t going anywhere.   There’s a lot of snow covered roads across the region and travel will be dangerous and impossible in numerous South Alabama counties.    The other issue will be the bitter cold temps overnight into Wednesday morning.  Actual temps will start out in the teens but wind chills will hover in the single digits.  That’s bitter cold and precautions should be taken to avoid frostbite.

The melting process will begin during the day Wednesday.  We’re expecting abundant sunshine and temps to climb above the freezing mark.  Temps will top out in the mid to upper 30s across the area.  It’s back into the deep freeze again Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Another round of upper teens to lower 20s are likely.  Any lingering moisture will refreeze and icy spots will continue to be a threat.

We begin to slowly make our way out of this Arctic air mass during the latter half of the week.  Mainly sunny skies and temps climbing into the 40s for highs will help thaw us out. Overnight temps will still be cold and down in the 20s.   There will be a more significant warmup late in the weekend and heading into early next week.  Rain will be back in the forecast but temps will warm into the mid 60s for highs.
