Free screenings held in Selma to raise Glaucoma awareness

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

Primary Eyecare Center and VIP Organization — team up to hold a free glaucoma screening in Selma.

Waka Glaucoma0123 VoOptometrist Dr. Kristina Lovinggood checked eye pressure — vision — and educated people about glaucoma during the screening.

Glaucoma is a condition that damages the optic nerve in the eye — which can lead to vision loss and blindness.

Lovinggood says the disease can develop slowly — so yearly eye screenings are important.

“They call Glaucoma — the silent thief of vison — cause there’s really no symptoms usually. There is what they call Angle Closure Glaucoma where you will have pain and halos and things like that. But most of the time you won’t have any symptoms of it,” said Lovinggood.

“So, basically getting an eye exam and having your eyes checked is the most important thing.”

The screening was held in observance of Glaucoma Awareness Month.
