ACTION 8 UPDATE: Suspect accused of hitting woman with stolen car in Montgomery captured
ACTION 8 UPDATE: The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says the man they had been seeking who’s accused of hitting a woman with a stolen car has been captured. No other details were released.
Original Story:
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office needs your help finding a man who is accused of hitting a woman while driving a stolen car along with several other offenses.
Assistant Chief Wesley Richerson said that a deputy assigned to the MACS task force was on patrol yesterday afternoon when he saw the driver of a black Chevrolet Camaro running stop signs and driving recklessly. Richerson said the deputy tried to stop the car, but the driver sped off and eventually drove onto the sidewalk on Rosa Parks Avenue near West Patton Avenue.
That’s when a 58-year-old woman was hit by the car at around 4:00PM, Richerson said. He said she suffered critical injuries and was taken to Baptist Medical Center South for treatment.
Richerson said the driver, identified as 27-year-old Gerald Jerome Johnson, Jr., ran away from the car, which had a stolen handgun inside.
Richerson said Johnson is wanted in Elmore County and the car was reported stolen.
Johnson is still on the run and should be considered armed and dangerous, Richarson said. When he is captured, he faces charges of assault in the first degree, felony attempting to elude and receiving stolen property. Richerson said more charges are likely.
“We are fed up with these lawless criminals who destroy lives and create chaos in our community,” Richerson said.
“An innocent woman who was simply walking on the sidewalk, is now fighting for her life. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is working with ALEA, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, MPD and the MACS Task Force to ensure this violent criminal is apprehended and fully prosecuted for this atrocious act.
“We also want to thank the members of our community who called 911 and reported this incident, and to all those who assisted the victim on the scene. We are a strong community, and we will continue to rid our streets of these dangerous criminals. We are also praying for the innocent victim who suffered tremendously, and who has a difficult road to recovery ahead.”
If you have any information regarding Johnson, call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.
