Crenshaw County Jail inmates get job training while behind bars

Inmates at the Crenshaw County Jail are receiving hands-on job training thanks to LBW Community College.

The no-cost training allows 19 inmates to be trained for jobs in the residential electrical sector at the jail.

The partnership between the jail and the college is designed to help reduce recidivism and strengthen the local workforce.

“All the guys in here deserve a second chance, so that’s what we’re trying to gear them up for. To give them a second chance to have a good job and give them something to look forward to when they get out,” Crenshaw County Sheriff Terry Means told Action 8 News.

“The homes get better, your communities get better, your churches get better, and it just lowers crime and it’s economically a big impact for us here in Crenshaw County,” Crenshaw County Commission Chairman Charlie Sankey said.

“These courses are available across the state of Alabama through the community colleges that are in everyone’s area, and they are free of charge, and they are available to any Alabama resident,” LBW Community College workforce coordinator Jeanni Sanders said.

Since the program started in November, 31 inmates have received an LBW Workforce Development and Continuing Education certificate so far.
