Bridge Crossing Jubilee organizers announce major time change
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
Bridge Crossing Jubilee organizers announce a scheduling change for the biggest event of the entire celebration.
The bridge crossing reenactment over the Edmund Pettus Bridge will start at 12 noon this year — two hours earlier than usual.
The pre-march rally at the historic Brown Chapel AME Church will start at 11 am.
The change is due to a compromise to accommodate members of congress — who attend the Jubilee with the Faith in Politics Institute.
The goal is to have one unified march — to commemorate Bloody Sunday — the Selma to Montgomery March — and the signing of the Voting Rights Act.
“What we wanted to do is avoid any problems about having two marches. That’s not a good image for Selma. Unity is powerful. And in order to have unity, you sometimes have to sacrifice a little bit,” said Hank Sanders.
This year’s Jubilee events will also include — a full march from Selma to Montgomery — from March 10th through March 14th.
