Alabama lawmakers pass bill to overhaul Veterans Affairs board
Alabama lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that would give the governor control over the Veterans Affairs board.
Sponsored by Sen. Andrew Jones, of Centre, Senate Bill 67 allows the governor to appoint the commissioner. The commissioner would also become a member of the governor’s cabinet and the board would be reduced to an advisory role.
Under the current law, the State Board of Veterans Affairs appoints the commissioner.
The bill passed the House 56-39 and now goes to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk for her signature.
Action 8 News has reached out to the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs for reaction. We are waiting to hear back.
