Autauga County Schools opening storm shelters for upcoming severe weather threat
Autauga County Schools is opening two schools to use as storm shelters for the upcoming severe weather threat.
School officials say in response to advice from the Autauga County Emergency Management Agency, they will open the new Prattville Kindergarten School and Marbury High School as community storm shelters.
The state is expecting rounds of severe storms on Saturday through early Sunday, with the chance for strong tornadoes.
Both schools have reinforced areas inside the school to withstand winds exceeding 150MPH, school officials say.
“We are committed to enhancing the safety and well-being of our community, and we’re proud to partner with local emergency agencies in this effort,” Lyman Woodfin, superintendent of Autauga County Schools, said.
“We couldn’t do it without support from the Prattville Police Department and the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office. We approach everything with a student-first perspective, and this situation is no different. We want to ensure that our families and employees, along with community members, have a secure place to ride out this weather together.”
The shelters will be open Saturday from 2PM until 10PM. No pets are allowed.
Shelter doors will lock for the duration of a tornado warning, so it’s important to arrive before the warning is active.
Storm shelter hours may be adjusted based on storm changes. Please stay tuned for updates from the Autauga County EMA, who will provide any new information regarding this weather event.
