A Dangerous Severe Storm Event This Weekend!

A dangerous severe storm event will take place across our state this weekend.   There will be two rounds of storms we have to get through.   Our first round of storms comes through  late Friday night into early Saturday and the main event Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.  The second round will be stronger and more impactful area wide. We encourage you to go over your severe weather safety plan with your family before the storms arrive.

A frontal system will move into the deep south over the weekend but it won’t pass through until Sunday.   There will be a wave of storms developing well ahead of the front late Friday night into early Saturday. If they hold together, they would impact areas west of the I-65 corridor. There is some data showing storms may have a tough time developing in West Alabama but if they do some could go severe.  The main threats will be damaging winds up to 60-70 mph, tornadoes , and large hail.  We expect the storm threat to lower by 8am Saturday.

The more impactful storms (main event) will move into the region during Saturday afternoon and continue eastward into the evening and early morning hours of Sunday.  The severe storm risk is a level 5 out of 5 for West Alabama and 4 out of 5 for the rest of our area.  We’re expecting all modes of severe storms will be possible.  The main threats will be strong/long track tornadoes, damaging winds up to 60/70 mph, and large hail possibly up to golf ball size.  Rainfall potential will range between 1 to 2 inches. This could be a rather significant storm event and everyone will need to be weather aware this weekend.

We’re on the backside of all the active weather Sunday afternoon. Sunshine  and milder conditions will return to the area.   Sunny and dry conditions will get our upcoming work week starting off but there will be another chance for rain activity by the middle of the week.
